What does "Bio-dynamic" mean?

Many of you have asked me if my wine is organic. Vineyards such as Raymond and DeLoach produce organic wine. However, these two wineries take "organic" to a whole new level by utilizing bio-dynamic methods.

Bio-dynamics is a method of organic farming that views the whole farm/vineyard as a living organism. The vineyard is maintained as a healthy ecosystem that is biologically diverse. All of the plants and animals on the farm are interconnected and help to be self-sustaining and self regulating in order to create a balanced landscape reduces the need for external inputs. Similar to many methods of organic farming, the bio-dynamic farmer relies on manures and composts to build soil. However there are several techniques that are unique to bio-dynamic farming. These include the use of herbal and mineral preparations, known as the bio-dynamic preparations 500-508, and using the astronomical calendar to guide planting and harvesting.

Based on the fact that animals and animal byproducts (manuer) are used in this method, this means the wine is not "vegan". However, it does mean that no artificial pesticides are used which is definitely healthier.
