I've been asked many times: "What is the difference between French wines and American wines. There is definitely a difference between the philosophy of wine making in the Old World vs. the New World.

First, I'll list the Old World and New World wine producing countries - because it's not just France that follows this particular way of thinking when it comes to wine.

Old World Countries

* France

* Italy

* Spain

* Germany

* Austria

* Portugal

* Greece

New World Countries

* United States

* Chile

* Australia

* Argentina

* New Zealand

* South Africa

In the Old World vineyards, wines are produced for the sole purpose of pairing with food. The tend to be lighter in texture, lower in alcohol content, higher in acidity and have more subtle flavors. All of these things are meant to enhance the taste of the food you are consuming.

In contrast, New World wines are made to stand alone in addition to pairing with meals. They are heavier in texture, higher in alcohol content, lower in acidity and put forth a bolder flavor, allowing the consumer to enjoy this wine with or without food.

People who love French wines as opposed to American wines do simply because they are lighter. Americans tend to want instant gratification and bigger, bolder flavor, don't let that stop you from trying French wines!
